For heat and cold in one tub, the SaunaLife S1 and S2 series are Thermo-Pine immersion tubs designed to run either way: cold plunge for inflammation and alertness, hot immersion for sore muscles. They come in 1-person and 2-person sizes, and the S1NC package ships with an FDC-1A chiller already included.

A wooden hot tub is an outdoor soaking tub with a wood shell and a wood-burning stove heating the water directly, which is why it runs off-grid with no electrician, no gas line, and no pump.

How does a wood-fired hot tub actually work?

Water sits against a steel firebox. You load dry wood, light it, and the fire heats the water by direct contact instead of running it through a pump and a heater element. Convection does the circulating: cooler water sinks, the stove pulls it through a lower channel, and heated water returns through an upper channel, so the tub evens out without a motor. The S6N and S6B use an integrated 304 stainless steel stove. The S4 adds a second chamber that captures heat out of the smoke before it leaves the chimney, plus a superheated air gap between the fiberglass liner and the wood exterior. That is where the 50% wood reduction comes from.

How long does a wooden hot tub take to heat up?

Plan on 1.5 to 2 hours for the S4 to bring 304 gallons from 40°F to 95°F. The 436-gallon S6 tubs hold about 43% more water, so budget more time and more wood. Traditional wood-fired tubs without a secondary heat chamber typically take around three times as long from the same starting point. Cold air, wet wood, and an uncovered tub all stretch the timeline, which is why an insulated cover is the highest-value add-on you can buy.

Can one tub do both hot and cold?

On the SaunaLife S1 and S2 series, yes. Those tubs are built for cold plunges and hot immersion in the same vessel, and SaunaLife markets them that way. Fill cold and add ice or a chiller, or heat for hot immersion. The S1NC package includes the FDC-1A chiller so cold is available on demand.

On the wood-fired tubs it is different. The S4, S6, and Dundalk Starlight are heat tubs. The Dundalk Polar Plunge Tub CT362PP is a cold tub, with a white plastic or 304 stainless liner and optional Coldture Pro or Penguin chillers. If you want serious hot and serious cold at studio scale, buy both vessels rather than draining and refilling one.

Cedar, Thermo-Spruce, or Thermo-Pine: which shell?

Canadian cedar is the traditional answer. It resists rot and insects on its own, it smells the way a cedar tub should, and it greys into a look most buyers want. Both Dundalk tubs use it.

Thermally treated spruce and pine are the newer answer. Heat treatment pulls moisture and sugars out of the wood, which improves weather resistance and dimensional stability. SaunaLife rates its Thermo-Spruce at up to twice the service life of cedar in the same exposure. On the S4 it is paired with a fiberglass liner so water never touches wood, which is easier to sanitise and easier to wipe down.

Short version: cedar for the classic experience, thermally treated wood for lower maintenance.

Do you need power, plumbing, or a permit?

No electrical connection is required on any of the wood-fired tubs. You fill with a garden hose and drain through a tap. Chillers do need power, so the S1NC and any chiller-equipped Polar Plunge need an outlet nearby. Permits are local. Many jurisdictions treat an outdoor solid-fuel appliance and a water vessel over a certain depth as permitted work, and some restrict outdoor burning outright. Confirm with your building department and your insurer before you order.

Where do you put a wooden hot tub?

On grade, on a level compacted gravel bed or a concrete pad, with drainage away from the tub. Keep the chimney well clear of anything combustible and keep the ash-out path off decking and siding. The 1 and 2 person immersion tubs are far more forgiving on placement and are the usual answer for a small deck or a narrow side yard.

Can you use one in winter?

That is when they earn their keep. A live fire does not care about outdoor temperature the way a heat pump does. In deep cold you burn more wood, and you drain the tub between long gaps in use to avoid a freeze. Between soaks, keep the insulated cover on.

Every tub here ships by freight. Current estimates run 4 to 14 days depending on the model, with the S6B at the longer end. The S4 arrives assembled with steps, an insulated cover, drainage with tap, a polished stainless chimney, and a chimney cap, so setup is placement, fill, and first burn. Dundalk tubs assemble on site from crated components. Lead times move with manufacturer stock, so confirm the current window before you book a contractor or pour a pad. Have your pad finished and your access path measured before the truck arrives.
