Traditional or infrared at this size?

At eight people the decision is mostly about heat-up time and electrical load. Traditional electric barrels and cabins run hotter, produce steam when you pour water on the rocks, and take longer to reach temperature because there is more air volume to heat. Infrared rooms heat the body rather than the air, so they reach usable temperature faster and run at a lower ambient heat, which is why commercial operators favor them when sessions run back to back.

If the sauna is for a household that uses it a few evenings a week, traditional is the classic experience and the better value in this group. If people are paying to use it, infrared turns rooms over faster.

Best for large households

The two Scandia barrels are the value picks. Barrel geometry seats more bodies per dollar than a square cabin because the curved wall puts the benches where the heat already is. The canopy version is worth the difference if you get real winters, since it keeps snow off the door.

Best for commercial rooms

The Commercial 489 is built for a duty cycle a home unit is not. If you are putting a sauna into a gym, a recovery studio, a med spa, or a tanning salon, the questions that matter are heater duty rating, warranty terms for commercial use, and whether the electrical spec matches the room you have. What to plan for before you order

• Electrical. Every sauna on this page needs a dedicated 240V circuit. Get an electrician's quote before you buy the sauna, not after.
• Foundation. Outdoor models need a level pad. A gravel base or concrete slab, not grass.
• Delivery. These ship freight on a pallet. Someone needs to be there, and you need a path from the truck to the pad.
• Permits. Commercial installs almost always need one. Many residential ones do too, depending on your county.
