Indoor or outdoor decides most of this

Indoor units need a room that can take heat and humidity, and a 240V circuit run to it. Outdoor units need a level pad and a power run to the yard, which is often the larger cost. Get the electrician's number before you pick the sauna.

Traditional or infrared

Traditional saunas heat the air with a rock stove. You get high heat, and steam when you pour water on the rocks. Infrared saunas heat the body directly with panels, so the room stays cooler and reaches usable temperature faster. Neither is better. Traditional is the classic experience most people picture. Infrared is faster to start and easier on a household that wants a 20-minute session on a weeknight.

You only ever use the sauna alone or with one other person. A 5-person unit costs more to buy, more to heat, and more to run, and you will be paying to warm empty benches.
