    Description

Harvia Virta Combi: one cabinet that runs a dry sauna or a steam room

A traditional sauna and a steam room are usually two builds, two rooms and two budgets. The Harvia Virta Combi collapses them into one floor-standing unit. It is a graphite black electric sauna heater with a 5 litre steam generator built into the front of the same cabinet, made in Finland, and sold here in three models. The HL80SA runs 8 kW for rooms of 177 to 431 cubic feet. The HL90SA runs 9 kW for 177 to 494. The HL110SA runs 10.5 kW for 175 to 635, and is the only one offered in both 240V single phase and 208V three phase.

Four ways to run the same room

The heater and the steamer are separately powered, and that is the whole point. Run the elements alone for a traditional Finnish sauna, dry and hot. Run the steamer alone and the room becomes a low-temperature steam room. Run both for the humid middle ground most people actually prefer. Load the soapstone cup with oil or drop a herb bag on the steam grate and the same session becomes aromatic or herbal.

The steamer, and what it costs you in power

The tank holds 5 litres, runs about two hours on a fill, and evaporates up to 2.5 kg of water an hour. It fills automatically from a plumbed cold line, or manually if you have no line to that wall. It sits behind the front maintenance hatch, which is why the HL110SA is 19 inches deep against the 16 inches of the HL80SA and HL90SA.

The steamer is a separate 2,100 W element, not a share of the headline output. So an HL80SA is 8 kW of heater plus 2.1 kW of steamer, a connected load of 10.1 kW, and the HL90SA is 11.1 kW. Harvia wires the Virta Combi as two groups rather than one circuit, so the per-group draw is 22.1 amps on the HL80SA and 25 amps on the HL90SA. Your electrician needs the total, not the number on the box.

BEFORE YOU ORDER: FIVE THINGS THIS UNIT NEEDS AND DOES NOT INCLUDE

One, stones. Every model arrives empty and takes Harvia AC3020. The HL80SA and HL90SA hold 110 lbs and require a minimum of 100 lbs, three boxes. The HL110SA holds 154 lbs and requires a minimum of 150 lbs, four boxes. Two, a control. None of these will run without a Xenio CX30C, and it has to match the supply: CX30C-U1-XW for 240V single phase, CX30C-U3-XW for 208V three phase. Three, a cold water line if you want automatic filling, at 1.5 to 4.0 bar with a shut-off valve and vacuum breaker. Manual filling works without it. Four, two circuit groups and no GFCI on the heater feed, which Harvia states explicitly. Five, the right supply at the right part number. The 240V single phase and 208V three phase HL110SA are separate parts and cannot be converted on site.

    Benefits and Features

    • Heater and a 5 litre steam generator in one floor-standing cabinet
    • Four session modes: traditional Finnish, steam, herbal and aromatic
    • Separate 2,100 W evaporator element, so steam does not borrow heater output
    • Automatic filling from a plumbed line, or manual filling if you have no line
    • Soapstone cup for fragrance oils and a stainless grate for herb bags
    • Reservoir overheat protector that cuts steamer power if the tank runs dry
    • Holds 110 lbs on the HL80SA and HL90SA, 154 lbs on the HL110SA
    • Requires a minimum of 100 lbs, three boxes, or 150 lbs, four boxes, on the HL110SA
    • HL110SA available in 240V single phase and 208V three phase
    • ETL listed, rated IPX4, designed and made in Finland

    BEST FOR

    • Households split between dry sauna and steam
    • One-room builds that have to serve more than one preference
    • Commercial rooms on 208V three phase, using the HL110SA
    • Rooms with a cold water line at or near the heater wall

    NOT IDEAL FOR

    • Anyone who only ever wants dry heat. The plain Virta costs less
    • Rooms under 175 cubic feet
    • Installs that cannot give two circuit groups
    • Anyone unwilling to drain the tank after each use

    Which model fits your room

Size by room volume rather than floor area, because ceiling height drives the load. Multiply width by depth by height in feet. If you land between two models, take the larger. The HL80SA and HL90SA share a 16 by 16 inch footprint and a 110 lb stone load, so the step between them buys room volume only. The HL110SA changes shape, three inches deeper and carrying 154 lbs of stone.

    Clearances and install

Harvia publishes 2 inches to combustible material at the front, rear and both sides on every model, and 42 inches from the top of the heater to the ceiling. The manual adds a 75 inch minimum room height and 2.8 inches of clearance under the heater. Check the ceiling figure first. Every model is hardwired by a licensed electrician, and Harvia specifies a minimum 90 degree copper conductor, AWG 12 on the HL80SA and AWG 10 on the HL90SA. A floor drain is recommended, since the tank should be drained after every use.

Harvia Virta Combi range, published specifications. The HL80SA and HL90SA amperage, wire gauge and minimum room height come from the Harvia Virta Combi owner's manual, where the range is wired as two groups. The HL110SA amperage is unresolved: the same 29.2 A figure is published for both the 240V single phase and the 208V three phase part, which cannot both be right. We are confirming it with the supplier, so size that one with us before you order. Everything else is from Harvia's model pages and the supplier inventory sheet.

How the Combi compares to the plain Virta

Same family, same height, same heater outputs. The Combi adds the steamer and its own 2.1 kW element, takes a different control, and on the HL110SA gains three inches of depth. If you will never use steam, the Harvia Virta does the dry sauna job for less and needs no plumbing.

    Also Consider

If your room is larger than 635 cubic feet, the Virta Pro range goes further but drops the steamer. If you want the heater, the control and the stones as one line rather than three, we stock the Virta Combi as a package.

    Why buy this from RecovAthlete

The Combi has more ways to be specified wrong than any other Harvia unit: supply, control, stone size, plumbing and a two-group circuit. We check all five against your room before you order and tell you plainly if the plain Virta would serve you better. Call 866-861-6317, 9am to 6pm EST, Monday to Friday, or book a call. Financing is available at checkout. White glove delivery options available as a paid add-on.

    Questions buyers ask

Is the steamer included in the kilowatt rating?

No. The steamer is a separate 2,100 W element, so an HL80SA is a 10.1 kW connected load and the HL90SA is 11.1 kW. Size the supply on the total, not the model name.

Do I need a plumbed water supply?

Only for automatic filling. Harvia supports manual filling on the same unit, and the manual covers both. For automatic you need a cold line at 1.5 to 4.0 bar with a shut-off valve and vacuum breaker.

    Which control does it take?

A Xenio CX30C, matched to the supply. The CX30C-U1-XW is the 240V single phase control and the CX30C-U3-XW is the 208V three phase control. The plain Virta uses a different control, so a CX45 will not run a Combi.

    What stones does it need?

Every Virta Combi takes Harvia AC3020, 10 to 15 cm split-face olivine. The HL80SA and HL90SA hold 110 lbs and require a minimum of 100 lbs, three boxes. The HL110SA holds 154 lbs and requires 150 lbs, four boxes. Tell us your model and we will send the right box count.

Is there still a 6 kW Virta Combi?

No. Harvia has discontinued the HL60SA and it is no longer orderable. If you were looking at the 6 kW, the HL80SA is the replacement and covers a wider room range.

How long does the tank last?

About two hours of continuous steam on a 5 litre fill, at up to 2.5 kg of water an hour. Fill only when the heater is cold, and drain the tank after every use once it has cooled.
