Harvia Rounded Olivine Diabase Sauna Stones: the only stone a Spirit heater is allowed to use
Sauna stones are not decorative and not interchangeable. These are Harvia's rounded olivine diabase heater stones, quarried and packed in Finland. The R-991 is 5 to 10 cm in a 33 lb box. The R-995 is 10 to 15 cm in a 44 lb box. Rounded stone lets poured water run down through the stack instead of flashing off the top, giving softer, longer steam than split-face stone. Every sauna heater ships without stones, so buy these alongside the heater.
Which size you need
Match the stone to the heater, not to taste. The R-991 at 5 to 10 cm is what Harvia specifies for the Spirit range and most wall-mounted electric heaters. The R-995 at 10 to 15 cm suits large stone columns and wood stoves, where gaps are bigger and airflow matters more.

The Harvia Spirit heater will only accept rounded stone. Harvia's Spirit manual states that only stones of 5 to 10 cm are allowed and that stones with a cleavage surface are not permitted, which rules out every split-face product including the AC3000 and AC3020. For a Spirit you need four boxes of R-991 and nothing else. Do not substitute split-face stone, ceramic stone or soapstone into a Spirit. Running any heater with too few stones, or with the stones packed tight, is a fire risk rather than a performance question.

How to stack them, and when to replace
Rinse the dust off first. Start with the largest stones at the bottom and against the sides, stand elongated stones on end, and keep the pile loose enough for air to move. Do not wedge stones between heating elements or rest their weight on them. Harvia advises rearranging them at least once a year and replacing them annually to extend heater life. Knock two together: if they crack or sound hollow, they are done. Expect the level to drop about two months after a fresh fill, which is normal settling.

If your heater takes split-face stone, the Harvia AC3000 at 5 to 10 cm and AC3020 at 10 to 15 cm are the angular equivalents. Harvia recommends angular stone in the lower layers of most heaters, with rounded on top. That does not apply to the Spirit, which takes rounded throughout.

How many boxes does a Harvia Spirit need?
Four boxes of R-991. Harvia publishes both a 110 lb stone figure and a four box recommendation on the same page, and four 33 lb boxes come to 132 lbs. Buy the four Harvia specifies and keep the remainder as reserve stock for topping up, which is what Harvia advises anyway.
Can I use split-face stones in a Spirit?
No. The Spirit manual states that stones with a cleavage surface are not allowed and that only 5 to 10 cm stones may be used. Split-face products such as the AC3000 and AC3020 are excluded. Use R-991.
How often should stones be replaced?
Rearrange at least once a year and replace annually. In a heavily used room, more often.
Can I use these in a wood burning stove?
Yes. Harvia states rounded stone on the top layer works in all sauna heaters. For a wood stove the larger R-995 is usually the better fit.
