Harvia Protective Bedding: the plate that goes under a wood stove
A wood stove radiates downward as well as outward, and most sauna floors cannot take it. Protective bedding is a steel plate that sits under the stove and shields the floor beneath. Two sizes: the WL100 for the Legend and M series and the WL110 for the larger bodies.
When it is required rather than optional
This is not an accessory decision. Harvia requires floor protection wherever the floor is combustible, and also wherever it is tiled, because tile adhesive, grout and waterproofing membranes are not heat-radiation resistant even though the tile itself is. The one case where you can skip it is a bare concrete slab of 60 mm or more, which takes a stove directly. If your floor is timber, tiled, or a thin screed, you need bedding.
BEFORE YOU ORDER: TILE IS NOT THE SAME AS NON-COMBUSTIBLE
The most common mistake we see is assuming a tiled floor is safe because tile does not burn. The tile is not the problem. The adhesive, the grout and any waterproofing membrane under it are not rated for sustained radiant heat, and they are what fails. Unless you are standing the stove on 60 mm or more of bare concrete, fit bedding. Also check the load: a wood stove plus its stone fill is often 200 lbs or more concentrated on a small footprint, so the floor needs the structural capacity as well as the heat protection.
