Harvia Elite Pro Sauna Stones: heat-treated stone for rooms that run every day
A commercial sauna fires several times a day, every day, and ordinary stone breaks down under that. Elite Pro is Harvia answer to it: olivine diabase that has been heat treated to around 1000 degrees Celsius before it ever reaches your heater, so the thermal shock that cracks untreated stone has already been done to it. Harvia specifically names public saunas as the use case. Two sizes, the AC3050 at 5 to 10 cm and the AC3055 at 10 to 15 cm, both 20 kg.
What the heat treatment buys you
Sauna stone fails by cracking, and it cracks because every ladle of water puts a thermal shock through it. Pre-treating the rock at around 1000 degrees drives that process to completion before the stone is sold, so what arrives is the material that survived rather than the material that will fail in your heater. In a room fired once a week the difference is modest. In a room fired six times a day it is the difference between an annual restack and a quarterly one.

Elite Pro is heat treated but it is still split-face stone, which Harvia states in its own copy. The Harvia Spirit range does not accept it: the Spirit manual states only rounded stones may be used and that stones with a cleavage surface are not allowed. For a Spirit you need the rounded R-991. Note also that Harvia describes Elite Pro as grey heat-treated olivine diabase while its own studio photographs show a reddish-brown speckled rock. We have used Harvia words rather than Harvia pictures, so expect the stone to look closer to the photograph.
