Harvia KIP Electric Sauna Heater: the wall heater most home saunas actually need
The KIP is Harvia's plainest heater and its best seller. It is a wall-mounted electric sauna heater made in Finland, sold in three outputs across two control layouts and two finishes. The KIP45W and KIP45B run 4.5kW for rooms of 100 to 210 cubic feet, the KIP60W and KIP60B run 6kW for 170 to 300, and the KIP80W and KIP80B run 8kW for 250 to 425. Every model carries 44 lbs of stone in the same 16.1 by 11 by 23.6 inch cabinet, so more power costs no extra wall space.
The one choice that matters: W or B
The letter after the number is not the colour. It is how the heater is controlled, and it is the decision to get right before you look at anything else.
- B models such as the KIP60B and KIP80B have built-in manual dials on the heater itself. Left dial sets temperature, right dial is on, off and delay timer. Nothing else to buy, nothing else to wire. You cannot start these from a phone or from outside the room.
- W models such as the KIP45W and KIP60W have no dials. They need a separate Xenio wall control, ordered alongside. That costs more and adds a wiring run, and in exchange you set the room from outside the door instead of reaching over a hot heater.
Finish is carried separately, by an M in the part number. JH60WU1UL is the steel KIP60W. JH60WU1MUL is the same heater in graphite black. Same hardware, same output, same stone load.
Which model fits your room
Size by room volume. Multiply width by depth by height in feet. Harvia sets a minimum room height of 75 inches in the United States and 78 inches in Canada. If you sit between two outputs, take the larger.
BEFORE YOU ORDER: THREE THINGS THAT CATCH PEOPLE OUT
First, no KIP ships with stones. Every KIP holds 44 lbs of Harvia AC3000 split-face olivine. The required minimum is the one figure we will not state yet: the supplier publishes 44 lbs in one place and 50 lbs in another, so call us and we will confirm the box count before you order rather than have you buy short. Second, if you pick a W model you must also order a Xenio control. The supplier names the CX170-U1-15-XW on every W node. A B model needs no control at all. Third, supply is fixed at the part number. The 240V single phase and 208V three phase versions are different heaters and cannot be converted on site. Every KIP is hardwired by a licensed electrician.

Clearances and install
Harvia publishes a 42 inch distance from the top of the heater to the ceiling on every KIP. Side, front and floor distances vary by part number rather than by output, so read the figure for the exact model you are buying. Confirm the ceiling figure first, because it rules out more rooms than any other number here.

What is the difference between a KIP W and a KIP B?
Control, not colour. B models have dials built in. W models have none and need a separate Xenio wall control, which lets you run the room from outside it. Colour is set by an M in the part number, so JH60WU1MUL is the black KIP60W.
Does the KIP come with stones?
No. Every KIP holds 44 lbs of Harvia AC3000 split-face olivine, ordered separately. The required minimum is unresolved: the supplier publishes 44 lbs on one tab and 50 lbs on another. We are confirming it, so call before ordering stone for a KIP. Rinse the dust off before stacking, and stack loosely so air moves through.
Which Xenio control do I need for a W model?
The supplier names the Xenio CX170-U1-15-XW on every KIP W node, including the 208V three phase ones. A B model needs no control at all, because the dials are on the heater. Confirm the part with us against your supply before ordering.
How much clearance does a KIP need?

Can I run a KIP on 208V three phase?
On some. The KIP45W and KIP60W have 208V three phase versions under their own part numbers, JH45WU3UL and JH60WU3UL. B models are 240V single phase only.
Is there a 9kW KIP for the United States?
No. Harvia publishes no UL-listed KIP90 for the United States. The KIP90 on Harvia's site is the 230V European part. For more than 8kW, move to the Virta range.
